Paul E. Torlina joined Seyferth Blumenthal & Harris in 2022. With more than 20 years of experience, he focuses his practice on labor and employment law and related litigation.
Paul has built an extensive track record as a defense-side employment trial lawyer who represents employers in discrimination, harassment, retaliation, whistleblower, and vicarious liability cases in state and federal court in both Missouri and Kansas. He assists clients in risk management and analysis and the drafting and implementation of comprehensive and effective employment-related policies that reduce the risk of legal claims and potential liability.
Relying on strong case management skills in evaluating cases, Paul formulates efficient and effective legal strategies when litigation becomes necessary by investigating claims, engaging in complex discovery (including defending/conducting depositions), and trial preparation. He can also guide and advise clients in complex mediation and arbitration processes, and his experience negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements made with employers serves him well in handling labor union and workers’ rights matters under federal labor laws, including grievance arbitrations.
Paul also possesses significant experience in employee benefits work with an emphasis on ERISA enforcement litigation, subrogation litigation, and withdrawal liability litigation. He also has reviewed and drafted agreements for trust fund clients with third-party service providers/business associates. His initial work in private practice involved first-party insurance litigation, third-party defense litigation, and plaintiff’s insurance subrogation, giving him insight into all key practice areas at SBH.
After completing his undergraduate studies at Saint Louis University, Paul earned his Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law. Outside of his legal work, Paul enjoys outdoor activities with his family and is involved in the Kansas City ice hockey community as a player, referee, former coach, and member of the Mid America High School Hockey League’s Board of Directors.
